As winter approaches, staying safe and comfortable in rental housing becomes a priority, especially for young tenants who may be unfamiliar with cold-weather challenges. This workshop offers essential advice on preparing your home for winter, managing energy costs, and maintaining good health during the colder months.
Program:
The workshop will begin at 10:00 AM with an overview of common winter hazards in rental housing such as drafts, moisture, and heating inefficiencies. A housing expert will demonstrate practical techniques for sealing windows and doors and improving insulation using affordable materials.
At 11:00 AM, a health professional will discuss winter wellness tips, including how to avoid respiratory illnesses, maintain indoor air quality, and use heating devices safely.
Participants will then take part in a hands-on session creating DIY draft stoppers and learning how to properly operate heating systems to maximize comfort without excessive energy consumption.
Lunch will be from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM.
The afternoon session focuses on budgeting for winter expenses, including energy bills and emergency repairs. Financial counselors will provide strategies for managing utility costs and information about assistance programs available in Nancy.
The day concludes with a Q&A and distribution of a winter preparedness checklist and resource booklet.
