Who We Are

Founded in 1989, ASS POUR LOGEMENT JEUNES ET ETUDIANTS (APLJ) has been a steadfast advocate and resource for young people and students seeking safe, affordable, and accessible housing in Nancy and the surrounding region. Over the past three decades, our association has grown to become a trusted partner in addressing one of the most pressing challenges faced by young individuals pursuing education and early career opportunities: securing stable accommodation.

Our Origins and Journey

The late 1980s marked a period when housing difficulties for youth and students were becoming increasingly apparent. Recognizing the urgent need for organized support in this area, a group of concerned citizens, educators, and local stakeholders came together to establish APLJ. The founding mission was clear: to provide assistance and practical solutions to young people and students who often found themselves navigating the housing market without adequate resources or guidance.

From our modest beginnings, APLJ has expanded its reach and impact, adapting to changing social and economic conditions while remaining deeply rooted in our core values. We have consistently worked to build bridges between young people in need of housing, local authorities, educational institutions, landlords, and community organizations. This collaborative approach has been key to our ongoing success.

Our Identity

APLJ is a non-profit association dedicated exclusively to supporting young people and students in their housing needs. Our identity is shaped by a commitment to social solidarity, fairness, and empowerment. We are more than just a housing service provider; we are a community ally and advocate.

The association operates from our office at 35 Rue Raymond Poincaré, Nancy, where a team of experienced staff and volunteers work together to offer personalized support. We combine hands-on assistance with advocacy and educational efforts aimed at improving housing conditions for youth at large.

Our Core Values

Our work is guided by several fundamental values that define who we are:

  • Accessibility: We believe that housing should be accessible to all young people and students, regardless of their background, financial situation, or academic status. Our programs and services are designed to lower barriers and open doors.
  • Respect and Dignity: Every individual who approaches us is treated with respect, empathy, and confidentiality. We understand the vulnerability that often comes with housing insecurity, and we are committed to fostering a supportive environment.
  • Collaboration: We actively seek partnerships with local government bodies, educational institutions, landlords, and other non-profits to maximize our impact and create comprehensive housing solutions.
  • Empowerment: Our goal is not only to provide housing assistance but also to empower young people with knowledge and resources that enable them to make informed decisions and take control of their housing situations.
  • Sustainability: We advocate for long-term, sustainable housing solutions that promote stability and well-being, rather than short-term fixes.

Who We Serve

Our primary beneficiaries are young people aged between 16 and 30, including students enrolled in universities and other educational institutions, apprentices, young workers, and trainees. We recognize that this group faces unique challenges when it comes to housing:

  • Many students and young people come from outside Nancy or the surrounding region and lack local connections or support networks.
  • Affordable housing options are often limited, with rising rents and competitive markets creating significant barriers.
  • Navigating rental contracts, understanding tenant rights, and securing deposits can be overwhelming for first-time renters.
  • Students balancing studies and work may have irregular incomes, complicating their ability to meet rental requirements.

APLJ’s services are tailored to address these specific challenges through direct assistance, education, and advocacy.

Our Services

Over the years, APLJ has developed a range of services designed to respond to the evolving needs of young people and students seeking housing:

  • Housing Search Assistance: We provide individualized support in finding available and suitable housing options, including private rentals, shared accommodations, and student residences. Our team helps with identifying listings, contacting landlords, and arranging visits.
  • Information and Guidance: We offer detailed information about tenant rights and responsibilities, rental agreements, and financial assistance programs such as housing subsidies or guarantees. This helps young renters navigate the often complex legal and administrative aspects of renting.
  • Mediation Services: In cases of disputes or misunderstandings between tenants and landlords, we offer mediation to seek amicable solutions and protect the interests of young renters.
  • Workshops and Educational Sessions: APLJ organizes workshops on budgeting for housing, tenant rights, and maintenance responsibilities. These sessions empower young people with practical knowledge to sustain their housing arrangements.
  • Advocacy and Policy Engagement: We actively participate in dialogues with local authorities and housing providers to advocate for increased availability of affordable housing and improved support services tailored to youth and students.

Our Impact

Since our establishment, APLJ has assisted thousands of young people and students in securing housing that enables them to focus on their education and personal development. Our work has contributed not only to individual success stories but also to the broader recognition of youth housing as a vital social issue in Nancy.

We are proud of the relationships we have built with educational institutions, local government agencies, and housing organizations, which have enhanced our capacity to serve the community effectively. Our experience and dedication continue to make APLJ a cornerstone resource for housing support in the region.

Our Team

The strength of APLJ lies in its dedicated team of professionals and volunteers who bring expertise, compassion, and commitment to every interaction. Our staff includes housing advisors, social workers, and administrative personnel who work closely with young people to understand their circumstances and tailor our support accordingly.

Our volunteers, many of whom have personal experience with housing challenges or work in related fields, contribute valuable time and knowledge, ensuring that our services remain grounded and responsive.

Our Partnerships

APLJ believes in the power of collaboration to achieve meaningful results. We maintain strong partnerships with:

  • Universities and colleges in Nancy, to support students before and during their search for accommodation
  • Local housing authorities and social services, to align our efforts with public programs and resources
  • Landlords and property managers who share our commitment to fair and accessible housing
  • Other non-profit organizations addressing youth welfare, education, and social inclusion

Together, we aim to create a network of support that addresses housing challenges from multiple angles.

Looking Ahead

As the housing market and social landscape continue to evolve, APLJ remains committed to adapting and growing to meet the emerging needs of young people and students. We are actively exploring new initiatives, such as expanding shared housing options, developing digital tools for housing search, and strengthening advocacy efforts for affordable housing policies.

Our vision is to build a future where every young person and student in Nancy can find stable, dignified, and affordable housing—an essential foundation for their education, career, and life goals.
