Event Description:
Starting university life or moving out for the first time is exciting but can also be overwhelming, especially when it comes to finding and managing your own housing. This workshop, “Welcome to Your New Home,” is designed specifically for young people and students preparing to rent their first accommodation. Hosted by experienced housing counselors from APLJ, this full-day event aims to provide practical knowledge and skills to help attendees feel confident in their housing journey.

Program:
The day will begin at 9:30 AM with a welcome and introductions, followed by an interactive presentation about the basics of renting in Nancy. This segment will cover how to read and understand rental contracts, the tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities, and important housing regulations. Experts will discuss common pitfalls to avoid, such as rental scams or hidden charges.

At 11:00 AM, participants will engage in a group activity simulating the apartment search process. Working in small teams, attendees will analyze different rental offers, compare prices, and identify key features to look for in listings. This hands-on experience is designed to sharpen critical thinking and decision-making skills.

A lunch break is scheduled from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, during which refreshments will be provided in a relaxed setting, encouraging informal networking among attendees.

The afternoon session, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, will focus on financial planning and budgeting for housing costs. A financial advisor will explain how to manage monthly rent, utilities, insurance, and other related expenses. Participants will receive budgeting templates and tips for accessing financial aid, including housing subsidies and student grants.

From 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM, a Q&A panel with former students and young renters will share personal stories, challenges faced, and strategies that worked for them. This session aims to inspire confidence and offer real-life advice.

The day will conclude with a summary of local housing resources and how APLJ can continue to support attendees in their search and tenancy.
